The Choro of Pioneer Flute

Joaquim Antonio (Callado) da Silva Junior was a Brazilian composer and flutist. Joaquim Callado is considered one of the creators of the choro genre of music. (Rio de Janeiro, July 11st, 1948 – Rio de Janeiro, March 20, 1848)

The first reference to the term “Choro” was made in the 1870’s, when flutist Joaquim Antônio da Silva Callado, regarded as a pioneer in this process of merging European and African musical styles and rhythms, formed an ensemble called “Choro Carioca” (Choro from Rio de Janeiro). When Callado formed the “Choro Carioca”, or simply “Choro de Callado,” (Mr. Callado’s Choro), he organized the most out-of-the-ordinary small musical group in Brazil. Since its beginning the group had one solo instrument (the flute), two guitars, and one cavaquinho, and only one of the composers could read music: all the others would improvise the harmonic accompaniment.”

Dia Nacional do Choro

Pixinguinha – Alfredo da Rocha Vianna

In September 2000, president Fernando Henrique Cardoso signed an official document to announce April 23rd the National Day of Choro in Brazil in honor of Alfredo da Rocha Vianna Filho, Pixinguinha, who was born April 23rd, 1897. Every year since then choro has been celebrated officially on April 23rd through countless events in Brazil and around the world where Brazilian culture is a part of the local community.
